Windows® XP Service Pack 2 and Its Impact on Diskeeper Corporation Europe Products
Important Note:
These changes are not necessary if you are using Diskeeper or Undelete locally, i.e., not using the "networking" features such as PushInstall or remote control connections.
Service Pack 2 for Windows XP (SP2) contains a number of security-related enhancements to the operating system. Some of these enhancements affect the operation of certain network functionality in Diskeeper Corporation Europe's Diskeeper®, Undelete® and Sitekeeper® products.
Specifically, Windows XP SP2 increases the default security levels for the Windows Firewall (previously known as Internet Connection Firewall). Additionally, the default security settings for the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) facility and the Distributed Common Object Model (DCOM) facility have been changed to more effectively "lock down" Windows XP computers running SP2.
As a result of these changes to Windows XP, it is necessary to modify some of the new default security settings within Windows XP in order to allow the networking features Diskeeper, Undelete or Sitekeeper to function properly. Diskeeper Corporation Europe has created guidelines and tools to help our customers properly configure their Windows XP SP2 machines to work with our products. These solutions are based on information provided by Microsoft Deployment Guides and Knowledge Base articles.
The following documents and tools are available to help you configure your Windows XP SP2 systems to work with Diskeeper, Undelete and Sitekeeper:
This white paper presents an in-depth discussion of the specific changes in SP2, and how they affect the various Diskeeper Corporation Europe products. It also discusses a special ESI_Config_XPSP2.bat script file that automates the process of changing your Windows XP SP2 configurations for compatibility with Diskeeper Corporation Europe products.
This article gives step-by-step instructions for using the Group Policy Editor within Microsoft Active Directory® to make the configuration changes to Windows XP SP2 systems network-wide necessary for compatibility with Diskeeper Corporation Europe products.
This downloadable package is a self-extracting executable file containing a batch file (or script) that automates the steps necessary to configure Windows XP SP2 systems for compatibility with Diskeeper Corporation Europe products. This script can be run individually on each affected machine, or can be pushed out via Group Policy as a login script for affected machines.
Note that this script file is reliant on the DCOMPerm.exe file, which is also included in the downloadable package. This executable file is used by the ESI_Config_XPSP2.bat file to set DCOM permissions on the target machine to allow the communications necessary for certain Diskeeper functionality. This executable file is not intended to be run as a standalone utility. Instead, it is meant to only be called from within the ESI_Config_XPSP2.bat file.
As mentioned earlier, if you are not using any of the networking features of Diskeeper or Undelete, you do not need to take any special steps to configure your Windows XP SP2 systems for compatibility with these products.
