Question

Error 1911 when installing Diskeeper on Windows XP.

Answer

We have found that on some Windows XP systems the permissions in the registry have been restricted to not allow the Microsoft Installer to make modifications needed to redirect the default defragmenter pointers to the Diskeeper software. Please use the following steps to open up those permissions

Before you begin any editing of the registry, always update your emergency repair disk (ERD).

1. From the Desktop, click Start, then Run.
2. Type REGEDIT for the command and click OK.
3. Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on local machine hive.
4. Double-click SOFTWARE.
5. Highlight Classes.
6. Right click and select Permissions…
7. Within the Permissions for Classes window, select the Add button.
8. Within the Select Users or Groups window, select the Advanced button.
9. Within the second Select Users or Groups window, select the Find Now button.
10. From the resulting listing in the bottom sub window of the second Select Users or Groups window, highlight EVERYONE and select the OK button.
11. Within the previous Select Users or Groups window, select the OK button.
12. Within the Permissions for Classes window, highlight the EVERYONE group and check the FULL CONTROL check box in the Allow column.
13. Select the OK button to add the group, all subkeys should inherit this permission.
14. Reinstall Diskeeper.
