This behavior can occur when you try to install a program that is installed using Windows Installer. The following registry key contains a value of data type REG_EXPAND_SZ, and the string is null: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment Userenv.dll returns an error message when it tries to process the value, and Windows Installer quits. The following example shows a null value: This is a documented problem with Windows Installer on Windows NT 4.0 systems. The actual fix is not generally available yet, and may be released in a Service Pack. The quick solution is to go to Control Panel, System, Environment tab and scroll down the list in the windows looking for a variable that has no value. It is likely to be a User variable, but could be a System variable, too. When you find the variable that has no value, highlight it and hit delete. This should fix the problem.
