What is Defragmentation?
Defragmentation is the process of reversing by rewriting the broken up parts of a file to contiguous sectors on a hard disk. This increases the speed and access of data retrieval.
Defragmentation needs to take place on a daily basis in order to prevent this problem which occurs when files are updated. The computer has a tendency to save these updates on the largest continuous space on the hard disk. This is usually a different sector to the other parts of the file which causes the fragmentation bottleneck. The computer must search the hard disk each and every time the file is accessed to gather all of the file's parts and piece them together. This is what causes computer slow downs, hang-ups and crashes.
